Rabbi Daniel, we are both "official" enough to discuss the most important things in our lives over coffee in a cafe on Ben Yehuda St! (I loved to spend time there when I visit!) I appreciate your original thoughts.

I also have had years of people and relatives from the other side of the equation. Not with a strong messianic expectation but a sort of steady state view of religion, that we act as though the next 50 years...

I am not here propagating my own religion nor a new version of an existing religion
The only right I have answering questions on Judaism is having been educated in Judaism.
Otherwise I say I don't know or will research a matter till I do know.
On questions in which there is room for opinion, if I give it I say it is mine.

Hmm not a way i've ever heard this expressed. Is this your personal opinion or the "jewish" one as a whole thought by all rabbis and learned men/women?

Basically, yes. One in every generation.
Because there isn't one time that the messiah will show himself but rather we wait for him to arrive any day.

My grandparents and their grandparents waited for him every day as well. But there isn't some 400 year old guy somehwere waiting for his name to be called.

There is always someone with the potential to be him around, should we merit an early arrival.
When that person can no longer fulfill the role, then...

I'll give you a bad example.

Every four years there is someone who has the potential to be president of the United States but if the country doesn't merit it we never hear about him.
Instead we get the likes of Obama and McCain.

When he gathers in the exiles, educates all and builds the Temple, we'll know he is the Messiah.
