Pretty good article here on 2nd Temple thought and practice a few centuries before Jesus. These apocryphal works show that the Rabbis didn't have to change anything that was already in effect and practice at least 2 centuries prior to the Temple falling.
Those that believe once the Temple fell, Rabbis invented stuff about charity and prayer atoning, are simply proven wrong by literature that precedes Jesus by several centuries. The best claim opponents to Rabbis can make is that "the fix" was in well before the Temple fell and that Jews several centuries before Jesus had the "wrong but identical view" as Jews today on issues involving atonement.
So who wants to keep claiming the Rabbis invented something new after the Temple fell, in light of evidence centuries before this event that prove otherwise?
Like the claims about Rashi making up the I-53 interpretation, this one about a new atonement system after the Temple also lacks credibility and is proven wrong by some pretty damning documentation that leaves no room for such a preposterous claim.
This also backs up counter-missionary claims about Ezekiel 18/33, Daniel 4:24's point about charity atoning, and other verses that show alternate forms of atonement. This shows that the writers of the apocrypha and the Rabbis after the Temple fall were in line with the Tanakh.
Just more evidence that our interpretation of the following is correct:
"By lovingkindness and truth iniquity is atoned for..." (Proverbs 16:6).
"To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the L-rd than sacrifice." (Proverbs 21:3). "For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, and in the knowledge of G-d rather than burnt offerings." (Hoseah 6:6).
"Has the L-rd as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the L-rd? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken more than the fat of rams." (I Samuel 15:22).
