Abraham begged that Ishmael would live before G-d. As Abraham's son G-d made Ishmael a mighty nation. . .

Ishmael was not given the covenant. Neither was Esau (son of Isaac). David was a younger son of a lowly tribe of Judah and yet he became the king. Moses' sons did not inherit leadership.

Don't confuse Western / Chrstian ideas of inheritance (the eldest son automatically inherits) with Judaism and the Torah. It helps to ask questions rather than assume you know the answer.

Good catch. "tribe" is the incorrect term. Clan or "family within the tribe" is a more proper way of describing it.

You are going back four generations to get to Nahshon. From Nahshon there was Salmon then Boaz (who married the convert Ruth) then Obed and only then the father of David, Jesse, and finally Dovid HaMelech himself.

I think it is a stretch to claim that David's direct family was considered in any way powerful since they were shepherds. David was not from a powerful family and he was the seventh of seven sons (so much for the first born automatically inheriting anything as in Western cultures).

We can all claim some amazing ancestors (if we can trace our family tree), but in that ancestry going back five generations from Nahshon to David are ten grandfathers along the way (maternal and paternal), but one can just as easily find some not so amazing ancestors. There was nothing "special" about David's lineage excepting that Ruth was a convert and that G-d chose him out of all of those in Judah.
