How do Christians understand the various Divine punishments given in the Hebrew Bible? Protestant Christians believe there is heaven for believers and hell for non-believers, with no gradations in between. This would seem to contradict the Tanach examples of punishment.
1. Biblical punishments are for specific actions. Xianity says specific actions play no role in G-d's judgement.
2. Biblical punishment seems entirely out of place. If a person is saved and consigned to heaven, why punish him? If a person is consigned to the ultimate punishment (hell) for his unbelief, earthly punishment is pointless and superfluous.
