There are many views on this.

I will give you the view as I hold that Yeshua taught.

Yeshua and the Apostles didn't believe in bodiless souls as was taught by Philo etc., and which is understood in various degrees by todays Judaism as well as Pauline type Christians.

They held that they / we were living in the evil age. This type of captivity was a type of EGYPT bondage, where are the people liked captivity better than freedom.
If a person wilfully or defiantly transgresses (Heb, 10:26, Numb. 15:27-31), they can enter into Gehenna (as spoken in Matt. 5, and 1 Cor. 5, and Jude 22-23), in there present living souls (since they did not believe in dead souls).

Yeshua taught "the cause of the hand"...if it offends you cut it off, it is better to do this than to enter into gehenna.

So in other words, if you are prone to committing adultery, don't go where simlar people are or out of your way to fall pray to this wilful transgression. Better to do this than live with the consequence (divorce, disease, guilt and condemnation) for the rest of your life.

I hope this helps on one perspective.
Be blessed.
