cannot there also exist situations from which

Not really -- it is comparing apples and oranges.

Your physical body is mortal. There are many ways one can't save the physical self: auto crash, falling down a man-hole, etc.

But your soul is eternal. It comes from G-d. It is 100% pure and doesn't need "rescuing." It hasn't done anything wrong. Good and evil are merely "tools" G-d uses to help teach the soul to understand choice.

The only one who can save you from sin is you yourself. You do this by recognizing your sin -- and your responsibility for it. You then seek forgiveness from the person you wronged and from G-d. You really, really, REALLY try not to repeat the sin. And you grow.

Think of the story of Adam and Eve sinning.

Then think of Noah, who was a righteous man.

Then compare them to Abraham -- who took responsibilty not only for his own sins, but spoke on behalf of others (Sodom and Gemorrah).

See the difference?
