The dying to self theology of Christianity more than likely has different variations and different understandings. But, the basic concept comes first from Romans 6-8 of the Christian text.
The theology says that Christians are united with Jesus through his death and his resurrection. The sinful nature which was inherited through Adam has died with him. Evil lusts and desires, slavery to sin, and love of sin died with Jesus. A new life was given with his resurrection. Thus, Christians have fellowship with God through the resurrection. That fellowship is unbroken and is free from sin's grasp. (This theology will vary among denominations.
Very good Gretta and I am glad you wrote that there are denominational differences.
[Darby] Galatians 2:20--20 I am crucified with Christ, and no longer live, *I*, but Christ lives in me; but [in] that I now live in flesh, I live by faith, the [faith] of the Son of God, who has loved me and given himself for me. [Darby] Galatians 5:24 24 But they that [are] of the Christ have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts. The Xian concept is that not only is the individual united with Jsus but each individual Xian has to put an effort in putting their sin nature to death per Paul. Even though Paul stated that each believer is a new creation he/she still has to struggle with being a human being. Nothing has really changed but the Xian has to believe that a change occurred. Hope this helps clarify.
