Malachi,
Hey Doug, show us where ANY of the disciples believed in today's version of the so called Trinity. Also please show where any of the earliest Church Fathers believed in the doctrine. Please do this without presupposing the doctrine and working from there.
If you were to look at a man, you can see him because of millions and millions of atoms assembled together. If you were to take and look at those same atoms individually lined up side by side on a table you would not visualize those as being the man you saw when they were all assembled together.
Likewise, the trinity is all of the verses in the nt put together. We can take some of those verses to say here is one element being the essence of the trinity. The main
one of course is that Jesus is God. So here is a verse that
is fundamental that anyone who is a Christian regardless of historical time frame.
John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was,
I am
.
Note that Jesus not only was saying "I am" in the sense of saying that he was God, but Jesus also emphasized that point by saying before Abraham's existence.
I know that Judaism argues that it is "I shall be" in the burning bush account. But the issue is what Christians believe, and it is unassailable that Christians believe that Jesus is saying he is God. Which is the essence of the trinity.
Sincerely,
Doug L.
