Malachi,
Doug, What do you think about what Justin Martyr said about Jesus?:
Then I replied, "I shall attempt to persuade you, since you have understood the *****ures, of what I say, that there is, and that there is said to be, another God (ALLOS QEOS) and Lord subject to the Maker of all things; who is also called an Angel, because He announces to men whatsoever the Maker of all things, above whom there is no other God,wishes to announce to them."(Dialugue with Trypho, LVI)
What do I think of Justin Martyr? Since you asked, I think every Jew here should read his dialogue with Trypho, which is available on the internet. Set aside about 20 hours of reading time to read through the whole thing. Or just browse through the chapters, using the subject synopsis of whatever subject catches your eye.
Okay, JM was not talking about an independent separate God, but the one God in another way, as a matter of distinction... i.e. as in the trinity. This comes out when you read the subsequent dialogue in the remaining parts.
For example, in "Dialogue with Trypho", btw, Trypho is a Jew, part LVIII, an excerpt:
"I continued: "Moreover, I consider it necessary to repeat to you the words which narrate
how He who is both Angel and God and Lord
,
and who appeared as a man to Abraham, and who wrestled
in human form
with Jacob
, was seen by him when he fled from his brother Esau."
If a person does decide to put in the time, he would find the same arguments that I and other Christians have made here are nearly identical that JM made in his dialogue with Trypho..... 2000 years ago Only JM was not using the kjv as it was not available in his generation, but the LXX. The LXX quotes basically is identical to the kjv. The Jews didn't like that one either - to which, JM accused the Jews of leaving out several verses in their updated rendition that were proof of Jesus, in his dialogue with Trypho.
Malachi, you have made several other arguments challenging me, regarding the validity of the trinity. I have not responded because this particular thread is about whether Christians have always believed in a trinity - not the validity issue.
If want to discuss validity, why not make another thread?
Sincerely,
Doug L.
