Hi all,
I'm new here, so I will briefly introduce myself:
I am an Israeli disciple of Yeshua. I consider Him my Messiah, atoning Savior and Rabbi. I was born in a Jewish family (both parents) and grew up in the USA. Our family which we established in Israel is observant of Torah, halachah and Jewish custom, something we started before making aliyah (nearly 30 years ago now) and passed on to our children. That combination makes me a "rare species", so you may see me coming up with different answers from the norm
Far as knowledge, I am nearly fluent in modern Hebrew (I say "nearly" because of sabra kids who love to remind me what REALLY fluent is!), and I have a good working knowledge of Tanach Hebrew. I have gotten used to the rabbinic way of studying Tanach in yeshiva, which is to ignore the nikud and allow the Hebrew to say as many things as it wants to. So I am able to follow much of the rabbinic midrashic teaching and understand how they got there.
I have no degrees other than a lowly BA which had nothing to do with Bible or Judaism. What I do have is a dedication to check things for myself, and not take anyone's word for what Tanach says or doesn't say, what happened in Jewish history or didn't, etc. I do my best to check my sources against other sources, to weed out those who are just blindly repeating what they've been taught.
I am not a missionary in any sense of the word. I do not live off income from Christian, Messianic or Jewish groups - my husband and I work for a living. I work on a volunteer basis for an obscure teaching ministry called Restorers of Zion, which has the main focus of educating our own MJ community. But I have never refused an opportunity to discuss Torah issues with others who want to, regardless of the level of friendliness or hostility. This has led to some valuable learning experiences with Torah-knowledgeable sources, for which I will always be grateful, because it has only strengthened my grasp on the truth.
So that's where I am. For me, truth trumps everything else, and so there should be no red lines in searching for it. I have looked around your forum, and I have hopes that some here also have Truth as the first priority - if not everyone.
Now to put in my 2 cents on the original question from ephraim7, which seems to have gone off-track with the last post:
--------------------------------------------
Do the names Yeshua or Yeshu actually exist in Hebrew or is this something made up by messianics in order to "Hebrew-ize" their god-man?
--------------------------------------------
The name "Yeshua" (ישוע without the "hay") appears over a dozen times in Nehemiah and Ezra.
The problem is that people who rely on the English translations are only going to see "Jeshua" and sometimes "Joshua". Even the Jewish translation JPS ,used for decades by Anglo Jews, fell into this trap along with the Christian publications.
An interesting sidenote is that Yehoshua ben-Nun's name was shortened to "Yeshua" (Neh.8:17) and all the above translations felt free to "fix" it back to "Joshua", except for the much-maligned King James Version, which at least stuck to "Jeshua".
(In general, the NIV is the worst offender for "fixing" the actual Hebrew to something more to their liking - readers beware!)
The newer Jewish translation from Koren (Jerusalem) gets it right by spelling it "Yeshua" in every case, even for ben-Nun.
Since I never take anyone's word for anything, I will grant you all the same freedom. Those who can read Tanach Hebrew can check the evidence for themselves:
Neh. 7:7, 11
8:7, 17
12:1, 7, 8, 10, 24, 26
Ezra 2:2, 6, 36, 40
10:18
Note that this was not an unusual name - there appear to be several Yeshuas among the returning exiles. Nor was it an obscure name. One was so prominent he was named right after Zerubavel, as a leader along with Nehemiah. One (maybe the same one) was the head of a priestly household, another was a Levite and mandated to teach the people Torah.
I am surprised that this forum struggled over the simple truth that "Yeshua" is a legitimate Jewish name from 2nd temple times that is derived from the word "yeshu'ah" or salvation. It's not exactly a betrayal of Jewish faith to admit that every Hebrew name carries a meaning! And yet the factual yes from UriYosef was quickly followed by an attempt to cut the name off from its obvious meaning.
Many spiritual concepts in Tanach freely cross the line between male and female, and the rabbis have lots to say about that which is off-topic here. Many words and names are spelled differently at different places in Tanach, and the rabbis also noted that this is no accident.
As far as the nikud goes, your resident "professor of T'nach" no doubt is aware that this addition is important only for unified public reading, and that historically it was never meant to eliminate alternate meanings that are possible in the original Hebrew. The yeshivot still study Tanach without nikud for that reason.
If a forum dedicated to "messiah truth" can't handle the easy low-risk issues in a straight manner that keeps in touch with Jewish tradition, what will you do with the really sticky issues??
I hope this post is seen as constructive criticism, because I truly meant it that way.
greetings from beautiful, breezy Israel,
Hannah
PS - a technical question -- I tried to post an older (less accurate) version of this comment with the "quick reply" option, and it never appeared. That was a good thing in this case, but I need to understand for the future what happened. Anyone able to help me on that?
