Hi Sophiee, if both the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities were caused by getting into worshipping foreign gods, and the 70 weeks a " opportunity to avoid a second exile if they turned to G-d", then who were the foreign gods they got back into worshiping, resulting in the 2000 year dispersion?     I am at a loss because I don't know that Jews ever got back into worshiping false gods.
Douggg, I didn't say anything about Jews worshiping foreign gods.  I said that Jews were given the opportunity to avoid a second exile if they turned to G-d.   The second temple period was a time of many "spin-offs" of Judaism.  Many were Hellenized (the Sadducee), there were also Zealots and others.
"To the Lord our God are the mercies and the pardons, for we have rebelled against Him. And we have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God, to follow His teachings, which He placed before us by the hand of His servants, the prophets.  And all Israel have transgressed Your teaching, turning away, not heeding Your voice, and the curse and the oath, which are written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have befallen us, for we have sinned against Him. . . Seventy weeks [of years] have been decreed upon your people and upon the city of your Sanctuary to terminate the transgression and to end sin, and to expiate iniquity, and to bring eternal righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophet, and to anoint the Holy of Holies."  Daniel 9:9-24

The Jews had 70 weeks (of years) to stop their transgressions, turn away from sin and turn to G-d.
