The Tanakh mentions people being affected by evil spirits or having their hearts hardened. Why would Pharoah go after the children of Israel after all of the miracles he saw and suffered from? Apparently, a hardened heart is pretty stubborn.
The original followers of J could have had hardened hearts or evil spirits in them.
