The children are the children of the second generation.

The women, if any, of that first generation would be quiet elderly, if the men, their husbands, all died off. Their children would have been the second generation. The children of the first generation went in alright, but as adults, the second generation.

Regarding Tzelafchad's daughters go back Numbers 26:


Well, in the other verse it says that their father died in the wilderness, so they are children of that first generation, which would mean that the daughters are the second generation.
