There are some price variations too, so you may want to do a Google search on the title and publisher, and type into the Google search window the following: "The Jerusalem Bible" +"Koren Publishers" UriYosef

I also like the Artscroll Stone Edition. The Chumash is superior to the T'nach. (A Chumash is the Torah and the Haftorah). The Artscroll has 1/3 of a page
for the translation (left page), the Hebrew (right page) and 2/3rds of the two pages dedicated to commentary. I love the commentary!
The T'nach is good but because the volume is large with just the Hebrew and then the English translation the footnotes are pretty small (may 1/6th of the bottom of a page). It is better if one can afford the separate volumes. Still the T'nach is good and it is what I own, using the separate volumes at my Synagogue.

I feel that it would be appropriate to mention here that a Hebrew Bible must be treated with the proper respect: it should not be kept in a bedroom or taken into a bathroom or W.C.; it should not be put on the floor or placed face-down when open or upside down when closed; and should be treated at all times with the reverence due to a book in which the Sacred Name is printed thousands of times. And even when it is old and worn-out, it shouldn't just be discarded and thrown out with the garbage, but must be disposed of in the appropriate manner (if you are unsure of how to dispose of a Hebrew Bible that is no longer required, any Beit K'neset will be glad to accept it from you for disposal). http://mordochai.tripod.com - פרופ' מָרְדֳּכַי בֶּן-צִיּוֹן, יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל |

You used a Hebrew word which the questioner is highly unlikely to have understood, so Sophie translated it into the word which is used in English (it is an English word, but derived from a Greek word). Everyone understands what a Synagogue is, so why nitpick when it is used? |

Perhaps the Rabbi means that συναγωγή is not English. Synagogue (in English) may be pronounced the same as συναγωγή but it isn't English.
Just guessing, but is seems logical enough.

ProfBenTziyyon wrote:As Ezekah pointed out, the language used on our set of boards is English. In English, and in every one of the various European languages in which I have heard the term while growing up in Israel, it is some derivative of the original Greek word. Mordochai, why are you making such a big issue of this? Do you think that every one in the world needs to know, or exclusively use, the Hebrew phrase Beit Kneset? Unnecessary distractions such as this do not contribute anything of relevance to the discussion of the topic at hand, neither on this forum nor on any one of our other fora. UriYosef
