Hello! I'm looking for the meaning of תירושׁי (tirosh) in the following verses:
Judges 9 13. And the vine said to them, 'Should I leave my wine, which causes God and men to rejoice, and go to wave over the trees? 'and Hosea 4 1. Harlotry and [old] wine and new wine take away the heart.Does this imply תירושׁי is fermented? |

Thank you, professor! I don't have the link right now, but one of the other moderators said this term refers to grape juice, so I was somewhat confused.
Since this term is synonymous with yayin, then it can never mean grape juice? Thanks again! Much appreciated!

Ever go to a Chabad Shabbat when they bring out the Stoli's and single malt scotch? Things haven't changed much LOL.

Jastrow (p.1666) defines תִּירוֹשׁ as juice, must, wine; Danby & Segal's "Concise English-Hebrew Dictionary" [D'vir Publishing Co Ltd, Tel Aviv, 32nd Imprint 5727(1967)] give it as must or new wine; and, exceptionally, Arnold-Kellner & Gross's very old "Complete Hebrew-English Dictionary" [Shapiro Vallentine & Co, London, 1924] translates תִּירוֹשׁ as mead or cider! http://mordochai.tripod.com - פרופ' מָרְדֳּכַי בֶּן-צִיּוֹן, יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל |

Thanks again, professor. So, it can mean juice and that is determined by the context, correct? For example:
Proverbs 3 10. and your barns shall be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine. But can the term new wine also refer to fermenting juice or wine that has just completed fermentation? It also appears to me the definition of tirosh is derived, in part, from how it is used in the Scriptures (e.g. Isaiah 65 "as when wine is found in the cluster"). But are those instances examples of prolepsis, that is, the end product is in view, not its current state? |
