Posts: 70 Tue, 3-Nov-09 00:22:54 Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Hi guys, I was reading my newly ordered copy of the excellent Judaica Press Translation and commentary anthology of 1st Kings, when I read about Solomon reportedly being twelve when he was coronated King. Later in 1Kings 14 verse 21 it states that Rehoboam was 41 years of age when he became king. That would make Solomon 10 or 11 when he had his son, would it not? Is there any information on how young he was when Rehoboam was born? Perhaps the commentary is just speculation on Solomon's age? Thank you, Tony

Josephus, in Antiquities VIII 7:8, says he was 14 years old. Abravanel (Spanish exegete and statesman; 1437-1509 CE) disagrees with RaSHI arguing that fathering a child at the age of 10 years old is inconsistent with the laws of nature, and he reckons Solomon's age at around 20 years old when he became King of Israel, and that he died around the age of 60. He bases his calculation on 1Kings 11:4, among other things, where we read that "... when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart after other gods...". Abravanel claims that the age of 60 years is the least age at which the term "old" would be used. He also notes that, when Solomon refers to himself as a "little child" in 1Kings 3:7, it is a metaphor for being "inexperienced" in managing the affairs of the State, not necessarily an allusion to his chronological age. Professor, when in doubt, google it! According to the top two hits, the most common definition of V/R is: 1) Virtual Reality 2) Very Respectfully I suspect he meant the second.
