We often hear theories that G-d has punished Israel for their rejection of Christianity, or for various other reasons. But one thing that never seems to accompany these claims is the fact that those sent against Israel by G-d were always punished for their deeds.
What happened to Egypt? Their kingdom was thrown into chaos with the Exodus. The 22nd through 25th dynasties or so were ruled by Libyan and Kushite rulers, followed by the rule of the Assyrians. They got back rule for a short time before the Persians conquered and re-conquered Egypt, finishing it off for good.
What happened to the Assyrians? Within about 100 years after Sargon carried off many northern exiles they were destroyed. They sunk into a weak nation and were finally finished off by the Babylonians and Medes.
What happened to Babylon? Nebucudnezzar is said to have invaded Jerusalem in 597, and destroyed the city and Temple in around 587. By around 539 Babylon belonged to Cyrus and his Persian Empire.
It goes on and on throughout history. Israel was punished just as the curses of the Torah said they would be if they allowed themselves to be influenced by foreign nations and their gods and practices. However, these oppressors are always punished for their affliction of the Jewish people.
As it is said in Genesis:
Bereishit 12:2-3
2. And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will aggrandize your name, and [you shall] be a blessing.
3. And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you."

I asked for strength, and G-d gave difficulties to make me strong. I asked for wisdom, and G-d gave me problems to solve. I asked for prosperity, and G-d gave me brawn and brain to work. I asked for courage, and G-d gave me dangers to overcome. I asked for love, and G-d gave me troubled people to help. I asked for favors, and G-d gave me opportunities. I received nothing I wanted. I received everything I needed. My prayers were answered.
